If you’re building or buying a new home or just replacing the flooring in your existing home, we know that there is a lot to think about when you choose which carpets you want. And if you have kids or pets, there is even more to think about. That’s because kids and pets are hard on carpets–running around, spilling things, dragging in dirt, and more. When you choose new carpets, you need to choose durable carpets that will hold up as your kids grow up and your dogs throw up. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself replacing your carpets again in a few years. Here some things that we recommend that you consider while choosing new carpets with kids and/or pets around.
The first thing to consider when choosing a durable carpet is the material. Carpet fibers come in two broad categories: synthetic and natural. Synthetic carpets are much more durable than their natural counterparts. Two types of extremely durable synthetic carpets are nylon and polyester.
Nylon is a great one for homes that have toddlers, pets, and teenagers running and stomping on it regularly. Nylon carpets are very sturdy, as the synthetic fibers hold their shape well, and especially in comparison to other materials, such as the loop style Berber carpet (which can easily snag). While nylon may be a bit higher in cost than other fibers, it offers a longer lasting color—even in high traffic homes.
If you’re more concerned with potential stains, polyester is a great choice for you. A carpet made from polyester fabric is stain resistant, and with softness that other carpets don’t have. It holds up well for busy families that want the inviting feel of carpet, without sacrificing quality.
The next thing to consider when purchasing carpet is the color of the carpet. There isn’t a specific color that is best, rather the shade is important. A light colored carpet will show dirt and stains easily, while a dark carpet will show pet hair, lighter spills, and dust. Thus, a medium shade carpet is the best choice for hiding most stains and other build up in your carpets.
Another factor to consider is multi-colored carpet. If you’ve ever wondered why public places almost always have carpets with multicolor specks, it’s because they are the best at hiding stains, debris, and other imperfection. Think about it, dirt on a blue carpet will stand out. Dirt on a multicolored carpet with blues and browns will blend in, and so will almost anything else.
No matter what kind of carpet you choose, you want to make sure that it has a carpet protectant on it. A carpet protectant is an invisible barrier that slows down stains and spills from absorbing into your carpet, making messes easier to clean and carpets last longer. Many carpets come with a factory-applied protectant already. Make sure you know if that is the case for your carpet, and how long that coating will last. If your carpets don’t have a protectant already or when it comes time to reapply, Chem-Dry Four Seasons is a great choice. Our carpet protectant is applied at the same time that we clean your carpets, guaranteeing that no dirt or stains get trapped underneath the protectant layer.
